Using Design Sketches in the Planning Process
I love Julie Andrews. Most people know her as the voice of Lady Whistledown. But she has been the Queen of Genovia, a superhuman Nanny, and more. In The Sound of Music, she sang a song called Do-Re-Mi. Do-Re-Mi are the first three notes when learning music. Do you know the first three “notes” of your wedding vision?
Your wedding vision is the cornerstone of everything essential to planning your wedding.
It starts with pictures…weddings are visual after all…Seeing what don’t like in a picture can be as valuable as knowing what you love. You can rearrange each picture until you know exactly how you want it.
I want you to take the vision out of your head and see it on paper.
As you read this, picture how 2D sketches can serve as the guidelines of your wedding vision so you can align your wedding with your sense of self.
Be Authentically Y’all
The wedding vision should be a true reflection of who you are as a couple. Showcase your love of travel through luggage tag favors or a globe as a guest book.
If you love flowers and nature, there is no reason for you to be stuffed in a bland, formal ballroom.
Having a clear visual plan gives you something tangible to reference when making other decisions. It keeps you from relying on mental mashups or piecing together mood boards from other events.
With a clear wedding vision in place, you can
- quickly edit your ideas,
- make informed decisions, and
- keep moving forward in your planning journey.
Finding Inspiration in YOU
Looking for inspiration around you is a great starting point. But if your wedding is meant to be more like YOU than anyone else, shouldn’t you find some of that inspiration from within yourself?
Think about how you work within a team at your job. The same principles apply when planning your wedding — we want to know what you are thinking.
As a planner, my responsibility is to guide you through the process, maintain the timeline, and ensure you stay within the budget you set.
Beyond the obvious, my job is also to help you channel your creativity into a design plan that reflects who you are as a couple. If you love neutral colors, your color palette shouldn’t be inspired by the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
You are a wealth of ideas and information all on your own. To be inspired by yourself, ask each other these questions.
- What do we enjoy doing together? Individually?
- Where do we like to hang out? Can we recreate our first date?
- How will we celebrate in the future? Do we want to travel in this season?
These questions help uncover hidden inspiration that you might not have considered. Asking these questions also means you can just date each other and discuss the future you want to build together.
The Design Process
One of the biggest hurdles in the wedding planning process is believing your wedding ideas are good. Seeing your ideas take shape on paper can give you the confidence to trust your choices.
Get clarity. Refine what you want and confidently select the team that will execute it.
As part of my design process, we start by exploring your interests, desires, and dreams. This initial phase is your creative outlet, allowing you to express yourself and be creative.
This part is often forgotten but so important. This is the time to dream without worrying about the budget.
Staying true to yourself also means knowing when to make adjustments. If something needs to be tweaked or modified along the way, 2D sketches give you the flexibility to make changes with confidence. You aren’t immediately locked into one idea.
